Foervraengd: How to draw a sparkly Shoujo-Manga Eye!
Time for a mini-tutorial! This is how I do really sparkly manga-eyes! I use a 0.05mm fineliner here, so the eye is just slightly bigger than my thumbnail actually.
Start with an average base for the eye. I use several strokes instead of one thick line. Trust me, the effect will be better doing this.
Add the eyebrow and upper eyelid.
Time to draw the iris, don’t close the circle here, instead leave one or two gaps, this will be used later for some reflections.
Add the pupil, don’t cover it in black or close the circle.
Now it’s time for delicious eyelashes! Draw the lower lashes with some space between each other.
After that, add shorter lashes between the gaps in order to create really thick lashes!
Now do the same with the upper lashes. But this time draw them longer at the left corners of the eye.
Fill the rest with shorter lashes.
Time to focus on the iris again. I draw a light outline for a reflection that goes over the pupil a bit.
Adding the main reflection, note that I added the reflection of the eyelashes to cover the reflection a bit. This is totally optional, I added it because I like to have a realistic touch to it.
Now I add eyelash-reflections on the iris as well, don’t make them cover too much of the iris.
TIME FOR HATCHING WOOOO! This is how you really create that typical shoujo-sparkle-desu effect. Draw several strokes around the iris, make sure that they get smaller/thinner at the lower part of the iris. And remember to not cover the reflection as well.
As you can now see, I’ve jumped over the reflected areas to make sure they wont disappear in all the hatching.
Use simple hatching over the pupil without making it all black. We are almost finished!
Added some last crosshatchings around the eye and the eyelids, do quick and very light strokes for this - otherwise it will turn out overdone. If your fineliners are starting to “die” you can save them for these sorts of effects, since the lines will be more fainted but still visible.
Now we’re done! Now go draw sailor moon!
Reblogging a 2 and a half year old tutorial!
I actually completely forgot I used to draw eyes like this… I should start doing that again, it looked pretty cool now when I look at it.
